This revelation follows recent attacks on Australian superannuation funds where hackers targeted pensioners' accounts using leaked passwords.


Cybersecurity experts from Dvuln, a firm that discovered this breach, attribute it to infostealer malware infecting users' devices, particularly Windows computers. This malware is designed to steal sensitive data such as passwords, credit card details, and browser data from infected devices. It overwhelmingly targets Windows systems due to their prevalent use.


The stolen credentials pose a genuine risk of theft for account holders, with threat actors potentially using them to transfer funds or engage in money laundering. Moreover, infected devices may have stored hundreds of other accounts' details, expanding the potential impact.


Despite some infections dating back to 2021, these passwords remain valuable to attackers. However, there's a notable lack of publicly linked theft and fraud cases related to infostealer malware in Australia. Experts believe many instances may go unreported due to difficulties in tracing specific malware infections.


To protect themselves, users are advised to update software and antivirus systems regularly, change passwords from secure devices, use multi-factor authentication, and avoid using the same device for both sensitive tasks and browsing potentially malicious sites like torrent or gaming mod platforms.
